Genesis 5

Genesis 5 gives us the family tree of the first humans. You will notice as we read the rest of the first 11 chapters of Genesis, that humanity grows worse and worse with each chapter. That is why the emphasis on death in this chapter. Two verses stand out to me in this chapter. One is verse 3 where it says, "When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image, and he named him Seth." Now in chapter 1, God created humans in his own image, in his own likeness. Now after the fall of humanity, human beings are creating in their own image. We still contain the image of God, but it has been tainted by the fall. The second group of verses that stand out to me are verses 22-23 which describes Enoch's relationship with God. It seems to me that he was the only one of this group until Noah who walked faithfully with God. While the rest of humanity got worse, Enoch walked faithfully with God. As the rest of humanity grew more violent like Lamech did, and as we will discover in chapter 6 tomorrow, Enoch walked faithfully with God. And while everyone else died, Enoch was no more because God took him away. We do not know how Enoch was faithful, we just know that he was.

God, may it be said of us that while the rest of the world was given over into their own desires, that we walked faithfully with you.

I'm always fascinated by the administration in which a man can live 800 plus years...and pro-create in that timespan. Boy howdy, this is where we get the term "exponential growth" I suppose. Hey was it just me or did anyone else notice there was an Enoch and Lamech in the line of Seth AND Cain? Not sure if I ever caught that before.

This chapter reminded me of the times when I have walked through a cemetery reading the information on the gravestones: name, date of birth and date of death. It was poignantly clear to me that this life is but a vapor and I must always keep in mind that it is the eternal that is important. The only thing that matters is what we do for God in the space between birth and death - not possessions, not worldly fame - only Christ. "Lord, help me today to stay focused on what really counts."

Jeff - was Seth's son named Enoch or Enosh? To what verses are you referring?

No you're right, it was Enosh. But I meant "in the line of" both Cain and Seth. (See v.18 in Ch.5) It was actually Jared's son but in Seth's line. There is also an Enoch (the son) and a Lamech in Cain's line. I just found it interesting. Verse 25 references Lamech(Noah's dad).

Did you realize that Methuselah died the same year of "The Flood". I always wondered if he died of "natural" causes or from the flood.

Some say that man can not live to be as old as those in chapter 5 so it must be months but that would make Adam almost 11 years old and Cainan almost 6 years old. Others have tried different formula to the ages but none of them really work with all of the ancestors of Noah so as hard as man tries some things have to be taken on faith a lone if you look at the list of Cain’s ancestors in chap. 4 you can see a parallel to Seth’s ending with 3 women in Cain’s and 3 men in Seth’s the true meaning is not clear but just another of the mysteries of the Bible

In considering the authenticity of Biblical history, it is possible that the events could have been passed from Adam to Methuselah to Noah to Abraham and then one or two more times before Moses wrote it all down. The less times events are told, the more accurate the account is.
