Genesis 48

In Genesis 48 Jacob does two very important things. One, he retells his spiritual pilgrimage to his son and grandsons. It is important for us to tell our kids about the spiritual experiences we have had throughout our lives.

The other thing Jacob did was to bless his grandson. He blessed them both, but he used his right hand to bless the younger of Joseph’s sons. The right hand was a sign of dominance. This bothered Joseph, but Jacob was intent on it. It could have been that Jacob was going by his own experience with Esau or God may have revealed it to him. The lesson for us is to bless our kids. Too many kids go through life without being blessed by their parents and grandparents. To be blessed is to be accepted and to have the hope of a bright future.

“Father, we ask Your blessing. Teach us to bless one another especially our family. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

This reading reminded me of two days at a Christian family camp I attended with my two grandsons.

The evening was dedicated to blessing our sons and grandsons. We prayed asking for guidance in our blessings and then we wrote our blessings. During a service set in the midst of the beautiful forest all around us we sat with our sons and grandsons privately, with candles glowing and we read the blessing we had for each of them.

Our children and grandchildren were somber and you could see our words blessing them.

It is important, I think, to be overt in our blessing. We need to set aside a special time and dedicate it to the purpose of blessing our children.

My grandsons still remember most of what was said over each of them.
