Genesis 49

In this chapter, Jacob carries on the blessing to his kids. What he says to them will bear the consequences later on, and will characterize that particular tribe later. For instance, he says of Judah, "the scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet." Judah's line will of course become the royal line with David and his ancestors. Likewise, Joseph receives a blessing different from the rest of his brothers. Blessing is very important idea in Jacob's day. He of course, stole the blessing of his brother Esau. While not formally as big a deal today, we still need blessings from people who we would deem as authorities over us. Also, people with authority whether you are a pastor, teacher, mentor, or parent, give out blessings to those who look up to you. It will have an incredible impact on the way they live their lives. God has blessed us richly, and wants us to carry out his blessings to others.

"God, thank you for the blessing you have given us in Jesus Christ your son. Help us to carry out that blessing in the way we live our lives."

It is so interesting to note that the blessings given by Jacob to his sons were, in many ways, prophetic.

This tells me a lot about the blessings we give our children. If we tell them how precious they are and how God is mighty and full of mercy in their lives and they can become a great man or woman of God, abounding in blessings from His hand.

How often the blessings we give our children come true, I think, because they come to believe what they have heard and their lives are shaped by our words for them.

We must be careful that our words always lead them to fulfilled lives in Christ and not defeated lives in the worldly arena.
