Exodus 20

Exodus 20 is when God gave His people the Ten Commandments. The first four commandments deal with our relationship to God. The last six instructs us on how to relate to each other. It is important to get the first commandment right or the others are impossible to do. “You shalt have no other gods before me.” If we do not see the primacy of this command then living a holy life is impossible.

The commandments are mostly in the negative but there is a positive side to each one. For example, the positive of “thou shalt not have any other gods” would be “Thou shalt have God.” The positive to “thou shalt not commit adultery” would be “thou shalt know faithful love.” These commandments have withstood the test of time. Despite those who are offended by them can you imagine a society without them? What if murder, stealing, and lying were legal? Our land would be chaotic. The Ten Commandments are still current for today.

“Lord, thank You for giving us the Ten Commandments. Forgive us when we break them. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.”
